Researchers Develop Time Cloak That Makes Actual Events Vanish

Invisibility cloaks are nothing new, but now Purdue University researchers have developed a “time cloak” that conceals events using light, making the information invisible to everyone but the intended recipient. An invisibility cloak makes something disappear from visible sight, and a time cloak makes an event disappear in time by manipulating the light traveling along an optical fiber. One practical use is preventing someone from getting certain information. When the cars that let the pedestrians cross ahead of them speed up and re-join the rest of the traffic, no one can tell there was ever a gap in the flow – the pedestrians’ presence has been cloaked. In the same way, photons’ paths can be tweaked to create brief gaps where information can safely hide.”
